To create and maintain a vacuum, it is necessary to have mechanical devices that remove the gas contained in the vacuum chambers through pipes; these devices are called vacuum pumps. Essentially, a vacuum pump is a compressor, as it brings a fluid in the gaseous phase from a lower to a higher pressure. The difference, in the common sense, is that a compressor works at a constant suction pressure, while the vacuum pump works at a variable (decreasing) suction pressure and a constant delivery pressure.
