Essentially, a vacuum pump is a compressor, as it moves a fluid in the gaseous phase from a lower to a higher pressure. The difference, in the common sense, is that a compressor operates at a constant suction pressure, while a vacuum pump operates at a variable (decreasing) suction pressure and a constant delivery pressure.
