The Hewlett Packard HP 5890 Series II gas chromatograph is a chemical analysis instrument used to separate chemicals in a complex sample. This instrument uses a narrow, continuous-flow tube known as a column, through which different chemical constituents of a sample pass in a flow of gas (carrier gas, mobile phase); the constituents move at different speeds depending on their different chemical and physical properties and their interaction with a specific column packing, called the stationary phase. As the chemicals exit the end of the column, they are detected and identified electronically. The function of the stationary phase in the column is to separate the different components, causing each to exit the column at a different time (retention time). Other parameters that can be used to modify the order or retention time are the carrier gas flow rate and the temperature. The kit comes with a PC and Chromstar 6.2 software.
